Camping in Iceland. Do it!

Camping is with out a doubt, the best way to overnight when exploring beautiful Iceland. With the popularity of travel booming during the summer, pitching a tent allows you to escape the crowded & pricey accommodations, experience the natural surroundings that you came to Iceland for and gain some pretty cool experiences. I think back at a few of my trips to Iceland and some of the most memorable and enriching experiences come from camping. If you plan to visit during the summer months, the weather is warm, the sun never sets and you don’t have to worry about any animals aside from the occasional sheep wandering into your camp. It truly is the perfect place for camping even for the novice outdoorsman. You will save a lot of money too!
Fun fact: It is legal to camp pretty much anywhere in Iceland and you will see people taking advantage of this all across the country. You can even camp on private property. Here is the official regulation, โ€œCamping with no more than three tents is allowed on uncultivated ground for a single night, unless the landowner has posted a notice to the contrary. However, campers should always use designated campsites where they do exist. Do not camp close to farms without permission. If a group of more than three tents is involved, these campers must seek permission from the landowner before setting up camp outside marked campsite areas.โ€ Be respectful and don’t abuse this privilege including taking care of the land and leaving no trace.

Pro-tip: Need a shower while on the road camping? Iceland’s many outdoor geothermal hot springs require the use of shower facilities prior to entering. Pay a small fee to enjoy one of the hot springs and get a free shower at the same time.

    1. Indeed! There are some basic common sense rules though, avoid being within eye distance of residences, fenced in agricultural fields and anywhere there are posted no camping signs (usually high profile tourist attractions). You will see cars pulled off the road (safely away from road traffic) everywhere with people sleeping in them and tents all over as well.

    1. Thanks! I do go alone. Which is why I enjoy sharing all my pictures and stories with everyone, otherwise these experiences would be lost to only my own mind ๐Ÿ™‚

      1. Not for me, but Im sure my poor mother and friends back home worry a little. I have been solo traveling for so long that has become comfortable, although not too comfortable where I allow myself to be unsafe.

    1. Definitely add Iceland to your destination list! That rock formation is off of a side road just east of Vik. One of my favorite little side adventures in the country. Thanks for commenting!

    1. Iceland is amazing! I actually have gone on 3 adventures. The most memorable was the time I was invited by the president of Iceland over to his house for dinner (true story!). Aside from that, I love just freely exploring the countryside without plans or expectation. Always an enriching and memorable experience to be found. Thanks for your comment!

      1. Ha! No, inspired by iceland did a promotional campaign a few yrs back where they had citizens do videos of themselves inviting tourists over their houses. The President decided to join in and did a video. I wrote in, got selected and before I knew it, was in front of cameras and journalists hanging out inside their house. They eventually kicked all of the press out saying that when Icelanders have guests over, they want them to feel like they are in their own homes. So there we were, chilling out with the President. So amazing lol
