How to Take an Epic Landscape Selfie: Simple Trick

Use the video function of your camera.
Even your basic point and shoot camera or smart phone these days offers the ability to record in HD with decent resolution.

  1. Use a mini flexible tripod to hold camera or phone & mount to a rock, post, stick, branch, etc)

  2. Focus and frame shot
  3. Click record
  4. Proceed into view, make a goofy face, kiss your partner, jump up and down, etc. Be sure to move slowly though to ensure a clear capture (moving fast can blur the video)
  5. Return to camera and stop recording
  6. Playback recording and pause the video at the perfect moment (you can even advance frame by frame to get that perfect moment) and either capture as a still frame (most cameras now allow this) or playback on a device and take a screen shot
  7. Done!

This of course doesn’t yield the exact quality of a professional photo but I have found it works just fine in capturing amazing photos and you never have to worry about blinking. While I use it as a solo traveler, I know families who use this technique as well and allows them to choose the best shot to use.
Reminder: Never sacrifice your integrity as a responsible traveler for a photo. Stay on established paths and avoid restricted areas. (I hate disclaimers but there are so many instances of people these days doing stupid things to get a photo).

Bonus Tip!

To capture a solo shot like below where your head lines up with the sun, line yourself up between the camera and sun and move around until the shadow of your head casts directly over the lens of your camera. This works too if you want to move your hands into position like you are holding the sun.

  1. I just bought the exact tripod that you have pictured here and it is awesome! Opens up such a wide array of photo ops that normally couldn’t be captured with you in the picture! 🙂 Great suggestion! I have already made sure to introduce this to my friends and family because I am so happy with it!

  2. What a great idea! I’ve been wanting to posts some yoga tutorials and this would be a great way to capture video and still shots.

  3. I am not new to blogging, but I am new to being serious about blogging and having my own site. Two things I have learned here…I need a tripod and I think I need a gopro type camera. Great tips. Thank you for sharing them. The Broke Dad
